Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Medan

Your 8 Day Sumatran adventure begins this evening, so take your time to check into the hotel, and then feel free to get out and explore Medan at leisure, just make sure your back at the hotel in time for the important group meeting this evening.


Day 2 Medan to Bohorok

This morning we head out on a city tour of Medan, including a visit to Maimoon Palace. This 30 room palace built by the sultan of Deli in 1888 is sure to impress.  Its spectacular interior designs boast a beautiful mix of Malayan, Mogul and Italian influences. Afterwards we hit the road to Bohorok, one of the largest national parks in the world and famous for its orangutan rehabilitation centre. (BD)

Day 3 Bohorok to Berastagi

Be prepared to be left speechless this morning, as we experience a once in a lifetime wildlife encounter, with a visit to the orangutan centre in Bohorok.  Witness a morning feeding session in the rehabilitation centre, and enjoy learning about these magnificent creatures from local guides, this is a truly magical experience. Afterwards we head to cooler weather as we make our way to the picturesque hilly resort town of Berastagi. (B)


Day 4 Berastagi

Rise bright and early this morning as we pull on our hiking boots in order to hike up Sibayak Volcano for a remarkable sunrise and stunning view of the valley. Be prepared for a challenge as we conquer this spectacular volcano, although it is one of Indonesia’s more accessible volcanoes at 2094m its path can be a bit confusing and slippery after rain.  After descending back down to Berastagi, enjoy a free afternoon to relax or continue exploring, you may wish to relieve any muscle pains from this morning’s hike, with a relaxing soak in the local hot springs. Day 5 Berastagi to Samosir Island

This morning we head to the island of Samosir, enjoying a stop en route at a coffee plantation.  Here we learn all about Java Coffee and find out about the history of coffee in the area and discover what makes the Sumatran blend so special. (B)


Day 6 Samosir Island

Enjoy a day to rest and relax or get out and be adventurous on Samosir Island. You may wish to venture out for an excursion to see traditional batak houses, or take a trip back in time and visit the tomb of King Sidabutar in Tomok. Here you will learn about Batak history and the legend of the king, as you discover the ornate carvings on the monument.   Close by there are other monuments including another royal tomb said to be used as a fertility shrine.  (B)


Day 7 Samosir Island to Medan

After a morning at leisure we hit the road and head back to Medan for our final night in Sumatra, and our final night together as a group.  You may opt to get together with your travel mates and head out for a night out on the town to celebrate your adventures in Sumatra. (B)


Day 8 Medan

After breakfast, it is sadly time to bid farewell to your travel mates as this 8 Day Best of Sumatra adventure concludes on check out of the hotel this morning. Although it will be sad to say goodbye you will be left with great memories of a stunning island, a close encounter with majestic orangutans, rewarding volcanic hikes and great friendships made along the way as you explored Indonesia’s rainforest island of Sumatra.
