Overview

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Medan

Your 16 Day adventure through Sumatra and Java begins this evening, so take your time to check into the hotel, and then feel free to get out and explore Medan at leisure, just make sure your back at the hotel in time for the important group meeting this evening.

 

Day 2 Medan to Bohorok

This morning the adventure really kicks off as we head out on a city tour of Medan, including a visit to Maimoon Palace.  You will be wowed by this 30 room palace built by the sultan of Deli in 1888, boasting spectacular interior designs with a mix of Malayan, Mogul and Italian influences. After our city tour we hit the road to Bohorok, one of the largest national parks in the world, famous for its orangutan rehabilitation centre. (BD)


Day 3 Bohorok to Berastagi

This morning we enjoy a once in a lifetime wildlife encounter as we visit the orangutan centre in Bohorok.  Enjoy witnessing a morning feeding session in the rehabilitation centre, as well as learning all about orangutans from local guides.   This opportunity to see these magnificent animals in person is a truly magical experience. Afterwards we head to cooler weather as we make our way to the picturesque hilly resort town of Berastagi. (B)

 

Day 4 Berastagi

This morning we rise bright and early as we pull on our hiking boots and hike up Sibayak Volcano for a remarkable sunrise and stunning view of the valley. Be prepared for a challenge as you hike this spectacular volcano, although it is one of Indonesia’s more accessible volcanoes at 2094m its path can be a bit confusing and slippery after rain.  After descending back down to Berastagi, enjoy a free afternoon to relax or continue exploring, you may wish to relieve any muscle pains from this morning’s hike, with a relaxing soak in the local hot springs. (B)

 

Day 5 Berastagi to Samosir Island

This morning we head to the island of Samosir, enjoying a stop en route at a coffee plantation.  Here we learn all about Java Coffee and find out about the history of coffee in the area and discover what makes the Sumatran blend so special. (B)

 

Day 6 Samosir Island

Rest and relax or get out and adventurous, the choice is yours, as today we enjoy a day at leisure on Samosir Island. You may wish to venture out for an excursion to see traditional batak houses, or take a trip back in time and visit the tomb of King Sidabutar in Tomok. Here you will learn about Batak history and the legend of the king, as you discover the ornate carvings on the monument.   Close by there are other monuments including another royal tomb said to be used as a fertility shrine.  (B)

 

Day 7 Samosir Island to Medan

Enjoy a free morning, then we hit the road and head back to Medan for our final night in Sumatra. (B)

 

Day 8 Medan to Jakarta

This morning we head to the airport ready for our flight from Medan to Jakarta.   On arrival in Jakarta we head to our hotel and settle into this busy city.  This evening we greet any new travellers joining us for our Javanese leg of the adventure.(B)

 

Day 9 Jakarta to Bandung

This morning we enjoy a guided city tour of Jakarta, visiting the former Batavia area where Jakarta began before it grew to its current size.  We also visit the Sunda Kelapa Harbour, once the main port of the Sunda Kingdom, now a bustling port full of Makassar schooners.  In the afternoon, we head to Bandung, where we enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to make the most of this large city set amid volcanoes and tea plantations. You may wish to see the traditional angklung orchestra, and be moved by the beautiful melodies of this traditional bamboo instrument concert performed by children. (B)


Day 10 Bandung to Yogyakarta

Enjoy the beautiful scenery and mingle with the locals as we board the morning train to Yogyakarta. Arriving in the afternoon, we enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.  This evening you may wish to take in a dance performance by the Ramayana Ballet, an Indonesian ballet that is a beautiful form of kintecic storytelling and acrobatics. (B)

 

Day 11 Yogyakarta

This morning we drive to Candirejo a small captivating village near Borobudur, and a great place to get a taste of life in a local village.  Enjoy meeting locals and learning all about ancient traditions and Javanese culture Here we also enjoy a tour by horse cart through the village, which gives us the perfect opportunity to see native customs, traditions and the agricultural system.  After a delicious local lunch in the village, we head to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world. This World Heritage Site boasts stunning artistic and architectural features, and we learn about its interesting history and the restoration of the site which lay undiscovered under layers of volcanic ash until 1815, when it was uncovered and cleared.  (BL)


Day 12 Yogyakarta to Surakarta

This morning we head to Solo (Surakarta), the traditional capital of the old Javanese Kingdom. On the way there we stop at the Prambanan Temple complex, a lavish example of ancient architecture.  Here we learn the history of these eighth to tenth century temples which now stand as one of the most outstanding works of Hindu art.   In the afternoon we enjoy time at leisure in Solo, you may wish to explore the city by hopping on a bike and discovering the sights of Solo. (B)

 

Day 13 Surakarta to Batu

After breakfast we continue our journey across the agricultural heartland of Java to Batu, a large hill resort surrounded by volcanic peaks on the lower reaches of Gunung Arjuna. (B)


Day 14 Batu

This morning we head to the magnificent Mt Bromo (2392m), and enjoy one of the most spectacular sights in Indonesia.  The stunning views from here exude a strange beauty seemingly from another world.  In the afternoon enjoy time at leisure to explore more of Batu, you may wish to visit nearby waterfalls or wander around the village. (B)


Day 15 Batu to Sanur

After breakfast we hit the road as we head to Malang, where we board a plane for a short flight to Sanur.  On arrival in Sanur we enjoy some free time to explore more of the city or take the chance to pick up some last minute souvenirs. (B)

 

Day 16 Sanur

This morning enjoy your last meal together with your travel mates, as after breakfast this 16 Day adventure of Sumatra and Java sadly comes to an end. On check out of the hotel you will be left with amazing memories of ancient temples, powerful volcanoes, humble villages, and amazing friends made along the way as you explored beautiful and mystical Sumatra and Java.
